Holistic Massage in Brighton Sussex
The medical use of massage is reputed to owe its early development
to a second century Roman physician known as Calen who advocated the
use of massage in the treatment of injuries and certain diseases.
Calen wrote 'massage eliminates the waste products of nutrition and
the poisons of fatigue'. In the early nineteenth century a Swede,
Henrich Ling, developed a specific massage routine based on
physiology. In 1899 Sir William Bennett re-introduced massage to the
medical profession and opened a massage department at St George's
Hospital in London. By 1990, the society had become licensed by the
Board of Trade, and was named The Incorporated Society of Masseuses.
During 1920 it amalgamated with the Institute of Massage and
Remedial Exercise. A Royal Charter was then granted and the society
became known as the Chartered Society of Massage and Medical
Gymnastics.
How it works
A full massage includes the legs, arms, feet, hands, shoulders and
back. The treatment relieves
muscular stress and tension, helps in lymph drainage, so improving
the immune system, improves
circulation, improves muscle tone helps nourish the skin, and
relieves emotional stress. Various
movements affect the skin, muscles, blood vessels, lymphatic system
and nerves and so promote a sense of health and wellbeing.
What happens during the treatment?
There is a wide variation of massage treatments and as with
Aromatherapy a full massage treatment
requires the client to be undressed with the same attention being
given to protecting the client's
modesty. Shorter treatments such as just working on a specific area
of the back require only the back to be exposed. A treatment such as
for the neck and shoulders can, if the client prefers, be performed
without the client needing to undress in any way beyond one layer,
i.e. down to a T-shirt or shirt. This allows the client the
flexibility to choose the level of treatment determined by what they
feel comfortable with or how much attention they feel is needed to
alleviate an illness, strain or ailment. Holistic massage is best
recommend for muscle pain, tiredness and to aid recovery after
colds, flu or similar illnesses.
Massage performed through clothing is performed using no additional
equipment other than the
therapist's couch. In treatments involving working directly on the
skin carrier oils are used. The
carrier oils used, also known as base oils, are determined by the
client's needs. For example for a
client with slightly oily skin I may use grapeseed oil, or for a
client with easily irritated skin I
may use almond oil. All the oils I use are of the highest quality
and again I use organic oils
wherever possible.
