Reflexology in Brighton Sussex
Reflexology has been used as a form of therapy in China for over
5,000 years. Japanese practitioners of Reflexology believe that
their therapy was first used over 5,000 years ago in India, taken to
China by Buddhist monks and then to Japan. More recently, in 1976 ,
Dr. Stephan Thomas Chang published the theory that the discovery of
pressure points took place on the battlefield. He explains how
wounded solders baffled the ancient Chinese physicians by claiming
that symptoms of disease suddenly vanished after being hit by arrows
or stones. The Chinese learned by trial and error that by applying
pressure to certain points of the body, pain was not only alleviated
but also influenced the function of certain organs and body systems.
Eunice Ingham (1879-1974) contributed greatly to reflexology's
popularity in the West by founding 'The International Institute of
Reflexology' in the U.S.A. A Student of Ingham, Doreen Bayley,
brought
Reflexology to the U.K. where she opened a school to teach the Ingham method.
How it works
Reflexology uses the principle that there are reflex areas on the
feet which correspond to all of the
glands, organs and parts of the body. By working on these areas of
the feet the body can be healed.
Reflexology helps relieve stress and tension and improves blood
supply and circulation so promoting the unblocking of nerve impulses
which helps the body's organs to work in harmony with each other.
What happens during the treatment?
Reflexology treatments involve working on both feet. During the
treatment the client sits on the couch with the backrest up so that
their feet reach the end of the couch. The therapist sits at the end
of the table to give the treatment.
The treatment starts with warming up and loosening the muscles and
tendons in the feet, preparing the feet to receive the pressure
therapy. The reflex zones are then systematically worked through
using various massage techniques on the feet. During this time notes
are made regarding any reflexes that are out of balance so that
after working on all the reflexes on the feet, I can return the
areas that need further attention. At the end of the treatment,
after warming down the feet, I take the client through the findings
of the treatment.
For effective benefits to be felt the treatment requires at least an
hour. For a client that has a
number of reflex areas out of balance, an hour and a half treatment
would be most beneficial.
Reflexology can aid in health matters in ways that surprise many
people. Reflexology has been shown to help neck problems, systemic
illnesses, infertility, insomnia and emotional issues as well as
many others.
A.R.T. Reflexology Cream is used on the feet. This cream,
specially designed for use in Reflexology, is made from lavender
oil, rosemary and geranium and acts as an antiseptic as well as
being restorative for the feet. It is 100% organic and not tested on
animals.
