Reiki in Brighton Sussex
The founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui was born on August 15th 1865 in the Yamagata district of the prefecture of Gifu, Japan. In 1918, desiring to find purpose to his life he began studying the Buddhist tenants. On the advice of his master Usui decided to fast for 21 days on Mt. Kurama. During the course of his fast he 'felt the air in a mysterious way'. On his return from the mountain Usui found that he was able to heal himself and others. He decided that this great gift should be made available to everyone and in April 1922 he opened his first 'seat of learning' in Tokyo.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi was born in 1879 and by the time he had received his teaching level in 1925, he had served as a naval officer and undertaken medical training. Hayashi became the teacher of Mrs. Hawayo Takata who was born in Hawaii in 1900. In 1930 Mrs. Takata became very ill and travelled to Japan to see her parents and have medical treatment. Whilst in hospital on the operating table she claimed that she heard an inner voice telling her that operation was unnecessary. She asked the doctors if there were alternative treatments to surgery and was referred to Dr Hayashi's clinic and after receiving a number of Reiki treatments she was cured. This experience led her to learn Reiki. She subsequently attained teaching status and returned to Hawaii in 1938. Many years later in 1970 she moved to California where she taught Reiki extensively until her death in 1980. During her career Mrs Takata initiated twenty two masters who in turn initiated many others. And so Reiki spread around the world.

How it works
Reiki is a natural healing system whereby the practitioner allows universal energy to flow through their body and into the energy field of the client. Reiki works on the principle that all living things have a life force energy field that vibrates. When we are healthy the field is strong, when we are ill it weakens. Reiki helps heal the weakness whether it is psychological, emotional, mental or physical.

Reiki can have amazing effects on some people, and has been known be helpful in battling illnesses that other treatments may not aid so well. Reiki has been known to effectively treat cancer and other dangerous illnesses. It often aids in promoting clear thinking and emotional stability and has proved effective in treating stubborn long-term physical injuries.

What happens during the treatment?
Reiki treatments require nothing more than the client to lie on the therapist's table and relax. Reiki energy is transmitted through the hands of the therapist to the areas of the client where healing is needed. Reiki treatments do not tend to work in the same systematic manner as other holistic treatments. Although many Reiki healers work systematically through different hand positions over the body, I find that my treatments have a more beneficial effect if I work intuitively, scanning the client and then treating the areas that I feel have imbalances or blockages. The treatment length can vary, depending on the will of the client, but for best effect the treatment should not be shorter then
20 minutes. The length of treatment that I advise would is generally around 45 minutes to 1 hour. The most common experience in nearly every treatment is the sensation of extreme relaxation and peacefulness. After the treatment clients often feels like they have come out of a long regenerating sleep.

Something important that I feel a recipient of a Reiki treatment should be aware of is the occurrence of bio-feedback. This is where the client can experience sensations during the treatment. This can often be experienced as a feeling of something like warm air or water flowing over them, or a sensation of tingling, slight hot or cold sensations or a feeling of lightness or heaviness. On rare occasions it has been known for clients to see bright colours or shapes or hear voices. Also on occasion, if there is a strong imbalance in that body, such as a physical problem, the client may feel an increase of pain in that area. If the client has an emotional issue they may feel the emotion more strongly. In such an occurrence if the client feels that they want to stop, the treatment can stop, but it must be remembered that such sensations are a signal that the treatment is having a positive healing effect in a similar way to how a broken bone can often ache when healing. Any 'strange experiences' should not be treated as a concern, as they are a natural reaction to the treatment.
